Casalvolone carries the Latin Casale Vallonis in its name, and through the Middle Ages its history is the abbey's. The monastery first appears in 975, held by Benedictines; when they left, in 1169, Cistercians came from Morimondo. A later document credits the foundation to three local brothers, Ardizzone, Enrico and Tommaso di Casalvolone.

The abbey then faded: its goods were confiscated under Napoleon, in 1819 the complex passed into private hands, and the abbey church, reduced to an oratory, came down in the early twentieth century. What survives is the pieve of San Pietro beside the cemetery, which served as the parish: walls of river cobbles and brick, low apses and a bell tower with paired windows.
