On the last Sunday of August Casalbeltrame, a municipality of 1,076 inhabitants in the province of Novara, celebrates its patron San Novello.
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta wears eighteenth- and nineteenth-century forms, but the building underneath is far older: the bell tower and stretches of Romanesque walling say so, as do the fifteenth-century frescoes of Christ's life found in the present roof spaces. Attached to it is the scurolo of the patron, the martyr San Novello.
The palace of the counts of Savoiroux has changed trade: it houses Materima, a centre where sculpture is designed, made and shown, and in the garden grows the ginkgo of Casalbeltrame, listed among Italy's monumental trees. Part of the land lies in the Lame del Sesia park, and the marsh named after the village is a nature reserve.
