Villata

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,618 · Postal code: 13010

Villata began with a move: people from the hamlet of Casalgualone, weary of the raids the quarrel between Vercelli and Novara kept bringing, looked for a quieter spot. In 1225 the new settlement is recorded as Villanuova Casalegualonis, later Villata de Casalgualono, at last simply Villata.

In 1427 Filippo Maria Visconti handed Vercelli and its territory to Amadeus VIII of Savoy, but Villata stayed out: it remained in the Duchy of Milan and was recognised as a commune of its own. The castle, named in a document of 1404, is a quadrangle with a single gate tower under Guelph merlons and a postern on the far side; the gate had a drawbridge, and the moat is gone.
