Saint Julian the Deacon, patron of the land of the Colle di Buccione
📅 Every year, on 7 January
Gozzano celebrates Saint Julian the Deacon on 7 January.
The name comes from the Latin Gaudianum, place of enjoyment, and from the same word seem to come local surnames such as Godi and Godio. The christening of the area is credited to the brothers Giulio and Giuliano, who are said to have built here their ninety-ninth place of worship.
The medieval village was made of two separate cores, the villa and the vicus, with the market square between them: from 919, by a diploma of Berengar I, a weekly market and a yearly fair were held there. On the hill to the east the castle, first named in 1015, held the palace of the bishops of Novara, a castle inside the castle. In 1928 Auzate and Bugnate, until then separate comuni, were merged in.
