Ameno

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 874 · Postal code: 28010

Ameno sits on a terrace above the eastern shore of Lake Orta. Below Lortallo and at the foot of Monte Mesma lie Golasecca cemeteries of the early Iron Age. On the urns, framed in panels, appear stylised four-footed animals read as horses: a rarity among people who decorated with geometric patterns, and the country around still suits horses.

On Monte Mesma the commune of Novara had a castle: in 1358 the men of Ameno and Lortallo, worn out by its abuses, pulled it down. On the ruins, in 1619, the Franciscan friary went up, a gable-fronted church between two baroque cloisters; inside, a serpentine marble stove still warms the friars' winter.
