Invorio

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,464 · Postal code: 28045

The name comes, on the likeliest reading, from the Gallo-Roman gentile name Eburius: it would mean the place of Eburius. The comune as it stands was born in 1928, when Invorio Superiore was suppressed and joined to Invorio Inferiore, which took the name that now covers both.

Two men from this hill village brought the Visconti to power in Milan: Ottone Visconti was born here in 1207 and became archbishop, opening the way for his family after years of war with the Torriani; and Matteo I, the first Visconti to rule the city, was born here too.
