Vaprio d'Agogna

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,015 · Postal code: 28010

The name comes from the Gaulish Wabero, a narrow valley with a sunken stream, a root shared with Vaprio d'Adda, Belgian Wavre and French Vabre. Until 1863 the village was simply Vaprio; the longer name came by royal decree, to tell the two apart.

The castle, more fortified house than stronghold, went up around 1220 with the old parish church inside its walls. Finding it in a wretched state, the bishop of Novara had it pulled down: the new church outside was begun in 1601 and consecrated almost a hundred years later, long enough for neighbours to speak of building the church of Vaprio.
