Bardonecchia

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,212 · Postal code: 10052

Tradition has it that the basin was once a lake, and the old parish church of Borgo Vecchio was indeed called Santa Maria ad lacum. The Saracens are said to have drained it in the tenth century by cutting a gap in the rock wall that joined Monte Jafferau to the Bramafam: the narrow gorge just before the town is still called Roccatagliata, the cut rock.

The name appears in the ninth century as Bardonisca, becomes Bardisca in 1001, Bardonesca in 1148 and Bardonecchia in 1365. One hypothesis traces it to the Lombards, who settled in the Susa valley too: from Bardi, with a suffix used to form the names of peoples, would come "territory of the Lombards". Bardonecchia is the westernmost comune in Italy.

Saint Hippolytus of Rome, patron of the town of the Palazzo delle Feste

📅 Every year, on 13 August; the hamlet feast is held the first Sunday of August

Bardonecchia celebrates Saint Hippolytus of Rome on 13 August, in the church dedicated to him; the Palazzo delle Feste, designed in 1913 by architect Carlo Angelo Ceresa in Art Nouveau style, was conceived as a venue for events, shows and musical performances. The first Sunday of August traditionally brings the hamlet's own feast.
