Cesana Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,007 · Postal code: 10054

Cesana Torinese lies in the upper Val di Susa, where the Ripa and the Piccola Dora meet below the Chaberton, on the Roman road from the Po plain into Gaul. In 1155 the emperor Frederick I allowed the dauphin Guigues V of Albon to strike silver coins here; from 1281 the coins carried the dolphin, which recurs in the local coats of arms.

The parish church of San Giovanni Battista, above the village, keeps the three apses and the bell tower of the Romanesque building; the doorway is dated 1518. Plaster has fallen from the stone flank, the tower ends in a spire above the clock, and a fifteenth-century fountain stands nearby.
