Salbertrand

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 579 · Postal code: 10050

Salbertrand first appears as Sala Bertani, on a diploma of Otto III of 1001, and then as Salabertani in a deed of the marquis of Turin. It belonged to the Dauphiné and then to France, within the Escarton of Oulx, until the treaty of Utrecht handed it to Savoy; Occitan is still spoken. The battle fought here in 1689 against the French let the followers of Peter Waldo, back from exile in Switzerland, push on to the Chisone and Pellice valleys.

The parish church of San Giovanni Battista is first recorded in the eleventh century: a Romanesque bell tower with a clock, a Gothic porch in front, and frescoes of the early sixteenth century.
