Sauze d'Oulx

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,111 · Postal code: 10050

The name comes from the Latin salix, willow, and in 1223 the village was still written Salice. Its arms hold two masters together: the dolphin for the Dauphiné, the lily for France. Neither is idle, since Sauze had to buy its freedom from royal power, first from the Dauphin, then from the king of France.

The hamlet of Jouvenceaux carries an older name: in the days of the mountain king Cottius the Sauvincatii lived there. Its chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate puts outside what is usually kept within — the wall under the stone-slab roof is covered with fifteenth- and sixteenth-century frescoes, given to the school of the Serra brothers.
