Saint Nicholas, patron of the land of the Susa Valley
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Borgone Susa celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December, in the church dedicated to him.
In the woods just outside the village there is a relief cut into the rock, from the second century: probably Jupiter Dolichenus, the god who protected the legionaries of king Cottius, though some read it as Vertumnus and others as Silvanus, god of the woods. Here it is called il Maometto, most likely because whatever could not be explained ended up blamed on Saracen raids.
Above the houses stand the ruins of the Castlàs, a fortified tower house: before 1426 nobody knows who built it or who lived in it. The coat of arms holds the wall and keep of that tower together with, below, water flowers, recalling how long this ground stayed marshy and unhealthy.
