Bricherasio

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,517 · Postal code: 10060

The name comes, some say, from the Celtic personal name Briccarius or Brittgarius; others take it from the Piedmontese brich, meaning a height. The first settlement lay off to one side, where San Michele stands today: the tolls, the awkward roads and the trade passing along the Val Pellice persuaded them to refound it in 1324 below the castle hill, where it is now.

In 1594 the rock, held by eight hundred French soldiers worn out by hunger and sickness, was besieged by a ducal army of some ten thousand. They held for a month and surrendered with the honours of war. The civil population came out of it reduced to 349 survivors.
