Campiglione Fenile

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,382 · Postal code: 10060

Until 1929 Campiglione and Fenile were separate municipalities, and the coat of arms still holds them together: per fess red and silver, it carries the rampant lion of one of the families that had ruled here and the crenellated castle of the other.

In piazza San Germano stands the largest tulip tree in Piedmont, forty metres tall with a crown thirty-five metres across; it is thought to have been planted between 1830 and 1840, when local tradition has Xavier Kurten at work on the castle park, after the gardens of other Piedmontese castles. In via Geymet a Caucasian wingnut of about four hundred years splits a metre above the ground into four huge limbs.
