Druento

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,436 · Postal code: 10040

The name tells you about the soil: Druent, the form that lasted until the nineteen-thirties, is the superlative of the Piedmontese adjective dru and means most fertile. It appears for the first time in 1196.

The village, though, was born from a precise deed: on 12 February 1263 several local lords undertook to build at their own expense a borgo beyond the Ceronda, as a refuge should communications with Turin be cut. The Aynardi raised the castle on the hill and, beside it, the first church; as their emblem they chose a sage plant, to say that here you were safe and on the most fertile ground.
