San Gillio

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,023 · Postal code: 10040

The name is Saint Gilles turned Italian, that is Sant'Egidio, to whom the parish church is still dedicated. It is a small medieval church, built to the pattern of a Templar mansio, and it still stands on a rise other than the one the town occupies today.

The present town was born of an agreement: in 1324 Filippo di Savoia-Acaia and the inhabitants settled on building a Villanova, which by 1331 was already finished, well away from the old settlement. The fief later went to Domenico Ambrogio Vignati, a jurist from Lodi, and stayed with his descendants — by then living in Turin — until the family died out in 1821.
