La Cassa

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,781 · Postal code: 10040

La Cassa is one of the few Piedmontese place names never italianised: in Piedmontese it means ‘the hunt’, the land having once been a hunting reserve. The arms confirm it: a silver hunting horn beside a castle and a mitre. Locals are jokingly called ij Cassarin, the hunters, or Giordanin, because Giordanino was once a very common surname here.

The village grew out of the borgata dei Giordanino; one early nucleus, la Fila, goes back to the sixteenth century and keeps the village oven. The parish church is San Lorenzo Martire. The land climbs to Monte Bernard, above a thousand metres, and below the houses the Ceronda forms a wetland.
