Frassinetto

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 272 · Postal code: 10080

Frassinetto sits on a plateau above the Valle Soana, on the valley's left bank, with Punta Quinseina and Punta di Verzel rising to the north-east. The name may come from its ash trees, though more probably from the place name Fraxinetum, traced back to the Arabic Farakhshanit, a fortified place: a character the old centre keeps. The arms show the ash tree anyway, with a cow at pasture and, above the snow-covered ridges, a black eagle in flight. The oldest houses, some fifteenth-century, stand in the northern hamlet of Chiapinetto.

Carlo Bonatto Minella was born here in 1855 to a farming family; his father was a woodcutter and made cheese. The two priests who ran the village school spotted his talent, and in 1869 he was admitted free to the Accademia Albertina in Turin, where at first he paid for his paints by selling cheeses from home. He died of tuberculosis in his father's house in 1878, aged twenty-two. The village keeps a small gallery of his work; one of his Depositions hangs in the parish church of San Bartolomeo, whose stone bell tower is medieval.
