Pont-Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,676 · Postal code: 10085

The name tells the geography: from the Celto-Ligurian Rordilitegna, said to mean "passage to two valleys" or "passage over two waters", which appears in a donation of Otto to the church of Vercelli in the year 1000, it went to the Roman Ad duos pontes and finally to Pont. The town sits where the Orco and the Soana meet, at the mouth of the plain.

The statutes of 1562 record that the town council met under certain elms, ringed by stone benches. In 1890 an enlargement of the church of San Costanzo led to their felling. Above the town still rise the towers of two enemy families: the Ferranda of the Valperga and, facing it, what is left of the San Martino's Castrum Pontis.
