Sparone

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,085 · Postal code: 10080

Above the village, on a height over the Orco valley, stand the ruins of the rocca. In the year one thousand Otto III took its feudal rights from Arduin, marquis of Ivrea, and gave them to the church of Vercelli; tradition has Arduin, by then king of Italy, holding out there between 1004 and 1005 against Henry II's army.

The castle came down in the sixteenth century and its stones went into local farmhouses; only the Romanesque church of Santa Croce stayed up, parish church until San Giacomo took over. Restoration uncovered late fourteenth-century frescoes: in the apse the four evangelists are not the usual symbols but men with great coloured wings.
