Chiesanuova lies at the western end of the Valle Sacra, on the right bank of the Piova, on a terrace under the southern flank of Monte Quinzeina. It is less a village than a scatter of hamlets — Villanuova, Priacco, Strole, Roncaglioni, Massè, Belice, Bornio, Piloni with its votive shrines — and even the centre comes in two halves, Cresto Superiore and Cresto Inferiore, also called Cresotàn.
The name probably comes from a new church that stood here before the present one, and the story repeated itself: the parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena, neoclassical front with Tuscan pilasters and three aisles inside, took its shape in 1838, when it was rebuilt where the earlier one had been. The village is medieval and was a fief of the San Martino di Castelnuovo, who from 1400 took its name as their title.
