Mompantero

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 651 · Postal code: 10059

Mompantero is one of the largest comuni in the Val di Susa, at the foot of the Rocciamelone. Its hamlets follow the Cenischia torrent below, while more than thirty settlements cling to the mountainside, the Tour among them, with their chapels and votive pillars. A stretch of Roman aqueduct survives at Urbiano, and at Trinità the ruins of the fortified house that is the comune's emblem.

The summit of the Rocciamelone has drawn pilgrims since 1358, when Bonifacio Rotario d'Asti carried a bronze triptych of the Virgin and Child there to fulfil a vow; it is now in the diocesan museum at Susa. In 1899 the alpini hauled up the statue of the Madonna delle Nevi.
