Groscavallo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 191 · Postal code: 10070

Groscavallo lies at the head of the Val Grande di Lanzo and is the highest municipality in the valley, with most of its hamlets on the left bank of the Stura, under the Levanne massif. The town hall stands not in the village of that name but in the hamlet of Pialpetta. The name may be Celtic, from graus and vald, green valley.

It appears in a deed of 1330, by which the Gontario brothers received in fief from count Aimone of Savoy a fortified house at Forno di Groscavallo and a twelfth of the land up to the mountain tops. Iron, silver, gold and copper were mined here for centuries, and Groscavallo miners were known throughout the Savoy duchy; a furnace on the valley floor melted cast iron into shot for the army. The comune reached its present size in 1927, when Bonzo and Forno Alpi Graie were joined to it.
