Ala di Stura

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 462 · Postal code: 10070

Ala gives the valley its name and is made of hamlets scattered across the slope; at Mondrone the Stura forms the Gorgia falls, a first drop of ten metres and then one of sixty-five. The name, most likely, comes from the Piedmontese ala, the shelter under which meetings were held, which came from the German halla.

The first document naming it is from 1267: Guglielmo di Monferrato granted the mines to one Barizelo di Gerola. Of the church of San Nicolao only the Lombard bell tower stands; in 1727 the parish church of Santi Nicolao e Grato replaced it, and on its stone flank, as on the houses, sundials are painted.
