Noasca

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 169 · Postal code: 10080

Noasca lies in the Orco valley, partly inside the Gran Paradiso national park, and runs from 841 metres on the valley floor to 4026 at the Roc, near the highest summit of the massif: no other comune in the metropolitan city of Turin covers such a range. Just above the houses the Noaschetta torrent drops 32 metres, a waterfall recorded since the eighteen-hundreds in the accounts of travellers, foreign ones included; the parish church, already called very old in Casalis's dictionary, stands almost against it, and the town's arms carry a blue waterfall pouring from a black crag.

In feudal times the village depended on the counts of Valperga. People lived on barley and rye, hay and potatoes, on livestock and the cattle trade with towns at the mouth of the valley such as Cuorgnè, and the men were known as travelling chimney sweeps: Casalis describes them as uncommonly sturdy and tall, and of a very good nature. The population was scattered among many hamlets, nearly all abandoned now, emigration having drawn the families down to the Canavese plain.
