Ribordone

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 67 · Postal code: 10080

Ribordone fills a side valley off the Orco, inside the Gran Paradiso national park, and is a scattered municipality: the town hall sits in the hamlet of Gabbadone. This is Franco-Provençal country, where the village is called Riburda. Higher up, in a basin invisible from the valley floor, stands the sanctuary of Our Lady of Loreto: the Piedmontese name of the place, Prascondù, means hidden meadow, and comes from just that.

Tradition dates it to 1619, when Giovannino Berardi, a local boy who had lost his speech the year before, saw the Virgin: to speak again he had to make the pilgrimage to Loreto and fulfil a vow his father had taken. He went, and got his voice back near a votive pillar on the way home. The villagers began a chapel where the apparition had happened; an avalanche swept it away, and the sanctuary was rebuilt on safer ground and consecrated in 1659.
