Locana lies at the centre of the Orco valley and scatters into almost a hundred hamlets: no comune in the metropolitan city of Turin covers more ground. The valley floor drops to 545 metres, while the highest point is the Torre del Gran San Pietro, 3692 metres in the Gran Paradiso group, whose national park covers the northern strip.
In the centre the parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli keeps its medieval bell tower, and Romanesque bridges are still in use in the nearby hamlets. Above Piandemma stands the Crus dal fòo, the beech cross: it replaced a huge old beech, felled by storms, long used as a landmark.
