Saint John the Baptist, patron of the land of the ricetto tower
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Salassa celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
Two things in Salassa are worth a proper look, and both go back to the thirteenth century: the ricetto, the walled enclosure where the community sheltered its stores and its people, and the tower-gate that led into it. The tower stands twenty-four metres high, cylindrical on a rectangular base, and was raised with rounded pebbles from the river; nothing else like it survives in the Canavese.
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista holds two ideas of architecture together: late Baroque elements sit beside solutions taken from the neoclassical vocabulary.
