The arms carry two gold stirrups with red straps and above them the French motto "Ferme toi". The honour of the stirrup had been granted in 1418 to the counts of Valperga for the way Giorgio, count of Mazzè, had fought in the service of emperor Sigismund, and it was later extended to the whole community: the insignia appear in the roll of arms of 1613, the general check by which Savoy verified who was entitled to a blazon, tax included.
The old Valperga arms bore instead a little silver hemp plant. Above the town stands the Sacro Monte di Belmonte, one of the seven sacred mountains of Piedmont, on the UNESCO World Heritage list: you can walk up to it from the centre.
