San Ponso

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 279 · Postal code: 10080

San Ponso is a small comune in the upper Canavese; its oldest building is not a house but a baptistery, beside the Baroque parish church that replaced a Romanesque pieve. The site was a burial ground already in Roman times: tombstones of the first and second centuries AD have turned up. Excavations in 1977 found an immersion font of the fifth century beneath it, replaced between the eighth and ninth centuries; on those walls, around the year one thousand, today's building was raised.

The plan is octagonal, with sides of unequal length and eight alternating apses, four rectangular and four semicircular; the walls are over a metre thick and carry a lantern with a hemispherical dome roofed in stone slabs, as at the baptistery of Lomello. The door lintel is a reused Roman block, roughly carved with a woman lying on her back and a two-line inscription. The tall bell tower on the dome was added in 1585.
