Feast of the Madonna del Carmine
📅 Every year, on 16 July
On 16 July Castellamonte celebrates the Madonna del Carmine, in the town that turned terracotta into its famous stoves.
Castellamonte spreads in a horseshoe below the hill topped by its castle, which is where the name comes from, Castrum ad montem, on the edge of the Valle Sacra. In the tenth and eleventh centuries the land belonged to the San Martino counts, descendants of Arduin, king of Italy: their county held together the Valle Sacra, the Valchiusella and the Val di Chy.
What the town is known for is ceramics: the first terracotta stoves probably date from the sixteenth century, and at the end of the eighteenth the franklin appeared here, the first terracotta fireplace with air circulation and a visible flame. At its centre stands the Rotonda Antonelliana, all that remains of the church Alessandro Antonelli began in 1842, meant to rival St Peter's.
