Givoletto

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,640 · Postal code: 10040

On Monte Lera, on the border with the Val Ceronda, there is a strict nature reserve set up to protect one plant: Euphorbia gibelliana, which grows only at Givoletto and in a couple of other places in Piedmont. It stands in bushy colonies of twenty to fifty plants; the stem, about half a metre tall, ends in a five-rayed umbel with a single flower and five leaves at its base.

The town lies in a basin closed by five peaks, open towards the plain north-west of Turin, and there are deposits of magnesite in its territory. The woods around the reserve, a mix of oak, hornbeam, cherry, lime and birch, have thinned over the years because of fires.
