Canischio

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 294 · Postal code: 10080

Canischio lies in the upper Gallenca valley, below Monte Soglio and Cima Mares, and its name is thought to come from a hermit called Cane who lived here around the year eight hundred. The centre is Mezzavilla, gathered around the Romanesque bell tower of the parish church, while the other houses are scattered in smaller clusters: Riapetto, Ferrero, Forest, Fogliasso, Sombeila, Braida. The local rock splits easily into slabs, long used for paving and for roofing.

Adelaide of Susa spent her last years at the castle of La Sala, where she had an aqueduct built along with other civil and religious works; for nine hundred years people have said a treasure is still buried there. In the country chapel of San Grato, at Rua di Sotto, a late fifteenth-century fresco cycle is credited to a nameless painter known as the Master of Canischio. In the early twentieth century the village had 1550 inhabitants, a bank and a gold mine worked by an English company; many later left for France and the United States.
