Val della Torre

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,812 · Postal code: 10040

Val della Torre is a scattered comune: the hamlets line up along the Casternone stream, and the seat is not one single village. At Brione, in the thirteenth century, the monastery of Santa Maria della Spina was founded, a Cistercian house for women aimed above all at the aristocracy and middle class of Turin. The monastery was suppressed at the start of the seventeenth century, but the church is still there.

Higher up stood a castle guarding the way to the Lunella and Portia passes: the French destroyed it during the War of the Spanish Succession, and the little that is left can be seen near the Castello hamlet. At the mouth of the valley, by the Caselette pools, remains of a Bronze Age village have come to light.
