Feast of San Silverio
📅 Every year, on the second-to-last Sunday of July
On the second-to-last Sunday of July Valprato Soana, a municipality of 112 inhabitants in the province of Turin, celebrates its patron San Silverio.
Valprato Soana lies in the Val Soana, on the right bank of the stream, where the two side valleys leading up to Campiglia Soana and to Piamprato divide. The name belongs to two villages that became one: in 1928 the municipality of Valprato was merged with that of Campiglia Soana. Tradition holds that Saint Besso was martyred on these mountains; the sanctuary dedicated to him stands at 2047 metres below Monte Fautenio and is still a much frequented place of devotion.
Outside the parish church of San Silverio stands a statue of Christ blessing with the cross and, beneath it, a Sator square. The rest of the village's history was written by mining: the Reala lead mine was still busy in the eighteenth century, and lead, copper and other minerals were taken from these mountains until the first half of the twentieth. In the last stage of the Second World War, in 1944, two South African Air Force aircraft carrying supplies to the partisans crashed at Pianetto.
