Antrona Schieranco

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 467 · Postal code: 28841

Antrona Schieranco was formed in 1928 by joining Antronapiana and Schieranco, high in the Ovesca valley. In 1642 a landslide broke from the flank of Monte Pozzuoli and fell a thousand metres onto part of the village, burying some forty houses; by blocking the Troncone it formed the lake of Antrona.

The newly built church of San Lorenzo was destroyed too, and its replacement grew out of the small oratory of San Rocco, spared by the slide. At Rovesca, among stone houses roofed with slabs, the oratory of San Gottardo carries an enormous Saint Christopher painted in 1669. Gold and silver mines were leased to English and French companies.
