Calasca-Castiglione

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 681 · Postal code: 28873

Calasca and Castiglione were two separate villages, joined into a single comune in 1928 without ever merging: they remain two mountain settlements strung along the Valle Anzasca, on the left bank of the Anza. The town hall stands at Antrogna, once the seat of the old comune of Calasca.

A little further on, above a huge boulder overhanging a gorge of the Anza, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna della Gurva, built in 1641. It is said to have been raised around an image of the Virgin frescoed long before on a small wall already there. An arcaded portico runs in front, and stone slabs cover the roofs.
