Bannio Anzino

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 518 · Postal code: 28871

The commune joins two villages long kept apart: Bannio, for centuries the administrative head of the Anzasca valley, and Anzino, across the Olocchia stream, its own commune until 1929. The coat of arms is halved: on one side the soldier of the Militia of the Madonna of Bannio, in uniform, sword in hand; on the other the church of Sant'Antonio in Anzino, on a green field.

That church changed jobs: born as the oratory of San Bernardo of Menthon, parish church from 1640, then a sanctuary when, in 1669, an altarpiece arrived showing the Christ Child appearing to Saint Anthony of Padua. It was called miraculous at once, and pilgrims came.
