Vanzone con San Carlo

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 435 · Postal code: 28879

The double name recalls two villages of the Valle Anzasca, Vanzone and San Carlo d'Ossola, made into one comune in 1875. The main one was called Avanzone, or Vantionum, and a legend explains the name: the epidemics had always gone past it, overtaken it. When the Spanish flu took lives in the villages nearby in 1920, Vanzone reported no deaths.

At Battiggio stands a tower of river cobbles, its corners built of squared blocks: nobody knows when it was built, or why. It is also called the Cani tower, and tradition holds that the treasure of Facino Cane's family was kept there; he worked the valley's gold mines and struck coin. Its four floors now hold an ecomuseum.
