Feast of Saint Gaudentius
📅 Every year, on 22 January
On 22 January Baceno celebrates its patron Saint Gaudentius, to whom the monumental church is dedicated; the town also has the Museo della Funivia di Goglio.
The name of Baceno is traced by some to the Roman Vacinum, a station here, by others to bascegn, beech wood. The first document dates from 1039, when Gualberto, bishop of Novara, handed the chapel of San Gaudenzio to the canons of Santa Maria; the village grew scattered around that church. The tower, raised before 1340, took tolls from caravans bound for Swiss markets.
The monumental church of San Gaudenzio was enlarged early in the sixteenth century: the stone front carries the rose window, the portal with the Adoration of the Shepherds and a large painted Saint Christopher. The bell tower ends in a spire.
