Saint George, patron of the land of Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero
📅 Every year, on 23 April
Varzo celebrates Saint George on 23 April, in the church dedicated to him.
The place is not one village but fifty-three clusters of houses scattered over the morainic terraces of the Val Divedro, some of them emptied of people, others lived in only during the months of transhumance. In the old centre a watchtower survives, already mentioned in the fourteenth century, part of a complex where merchants stopped to pay their tolls.
The patron is Saint George, and his legend has a version of its own here: the horse carrying him to paradise, in the last four steps before rising to heaven, set its hooves on four exact spots, and on those spots four votive shrines were raised.
