Crodo

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,472 · Postal code: 28862

Crodo is the main village of the Valle Antigorio, and on its land stands the Devil's Wall: a stone rampart closing three sides of a wide terrace aligned to the points of the compass, presumably for sacred and communal use. The first inhabitants were probably the Lepontii.

In 1380 the Ossola passed to the Visconti, who nonetheless granted it a special autonomy and built signal towers against the Swiss: signals left the upper Val Formazza and, tower after tower, reached Milan in almost no time. Under its stone bell tower the Romanesque parish church of Santo Stefano keeps the relics of Lupercilla; and from the local mineral waters came, in 1965, the Crodino.
