Premia

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 577 · Postal code: 28866

Premia lies in the Valle Antigorio, on the road to the Val Formazza. Its name may come from the Latin proedium, a farmstead; tradition holds that the old village stood between Pioda and Rozzaro, until a landslide buried it. That spot is still called Prem, where Augustan-age graves and a pre-Roman hand mill came to light.

The parish church of San Michele stands above the village, at the top of a stairway. It is early seventeenth century, but grew on the plan of a chapel that Guido II De Rodis raised in 1250. The De Rodis, vassals of the Empire, gathered the tithe for the bishop-counts of Novara from 1210; the chancel frescoes portray them.
