Formazza

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 442 · Postal code: 28863

Formazza — Pomatt in German, Pumätt in Walser — is the northernmost comune in Piedmont: Valais lies to the west, Ticino to the north and east. There is no single centre, only small clusters along the valley, and until the nineteen-twenties the only way up was by mule.

From the thirteenth century it was a leading Walser colony, mother colony to Bosco Gurin: the first Walser village south of the Alps, and still a German-speaking island. In the fifteenth century the Pomatter shook off their feudal lords, and from 1486 the Thalbuch, the book of the valley, governed pastures and woods and gave the community its own court. Log houses stand below the Toce falls.
