Macugnaga

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 601 · Postal code: 28876

Macugnaga was made by the Walser, colonists who came over the Monte Moro pass from the Swiss Saas valley in the second half of the thirteenth century. Titsch is still spoken here, a High German kept to its medieval meanings, and the houses stand on stone bases, with larch frames and stone-slab roofs. Below, gold was dug: the Pestarena tunnels worked until 1961.

The oldest core is the Dorf, with the Old Church attested from 1317 and the Old Linden, seven metres round, in whose shade the community for centuries held its meetings, its market and its judgements. Behind stands the east face of Monte Rosa, the only wall in the Alps of Himalayan size.
