Alto Sermenza

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 190 · Postal code: 13029

Alto Sermenza was created on 1 January 2018 by the merger of Rimasco and Rima San Giuseppe, two villages of the val Sermenza, in Valsesia; the referendum of 11 June 2017 had ended with 85 votes in favour and 15 against. Awaiting a coat of arms of its own, the comune shows the two old ones side by side: Rimasco's stonecutter carving a head, and Rima's mountain with its watercourses.

The stonecutter is not decoration. Rima is a Walser village, settled by people who came down from Alagna over the Colle di Mud, and it worked artificial marble: a trade that took its craftsmen as far as Bucharest, and that the village now tells in a museum of artificial marble and a plaster cast gallery. The town hall is at Rimasco, where in 1925 a dam closed the stream where the Egua meets the Sermenza, forming the lake that feeds the hydroelectric plant at Fervento.
