Alagna Valsesia

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 671 · Postal code: 13021

Alagna, Im Land in the language of its founders, began as a secondary Walser colony settled from Macugnaga and is on record from 1302. The larch-wood houses on stone bases are still there, and so is the speech: titzschu, one of three Walser varieties still alive in Italy.

Alagna is an old centre of mountaineering: the guides' association founded here in 1872 is the oldest in Italy after Courmayeur's, and the Regina Margherita hut, the highest refuge in Europe, is within the commune. Since 2019 the town has taken in Riva Valdobbia and is the largest in the province; on the arms the two villages' emblems sit side by side under Monte Rosa.
