On 26 July Madonna del Sasso, a municipality of 396 inhabitants in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, celebrates its patroness Saint Anne (sant'Anna).
No village bears the name: it belongs to the sanctuary built between 1730 and 1748 on a granite spur above Lake Orta. The comune is scattered, with the town hall in Boleto. Boleto and Artò were comuni of the province of Novara until a royal decree merged them in 1928: Artò lost the seat and protested for months.
To reach the rest of its own province, the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, you must cross the Novara area. The hamlet of Piana dei Monti lies in the Valsesia, with no road to the town hall: you get there over the Colma di Valpiana, in the province of Vercelli. A stonecutters' museum records the white granite quarries.
