San Maurizio d'Opaglio

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,104 · Postal code: 28017

This is the heart of the tap district: the first tap works opened around 1920, others followed, and after the war the town became the Italian capital of taps and valves. Before that the locals worked as stonecutters — picasàss in dialect — in the white granite quarries of Alzo, which ran out in 1945.

The arms hold both together: the mountain for the quarries and a cogwheel for the factories, with two twined branches for the pastures and woods of earlier times. The comune had been born in 1568 from the union of three villages, Briallo, Lagna and Opaglio; then, under fascism, it disappeared for some twenty years into a new comune, Castelli Cusiani, along with Pogno and Pella.
