Pella

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,038 · Postal code: 28010

Pella sits on a low peninsula on the western shore of Lake Orta, facing the island of San Giulio, under granite heights. The name appears in its present form in documents of 1039 and is traced to a pre-Latin word for rock. Until 1767, when Savoy took it over, this shore belonged to the principality of the Riviera, held by the bishop.

A medieval tower still stands on the lakefront, the only trace of its defences. The Sonzogno paper mill worked on the Pellino stream, making until 1907 the paper for the publisher and for its newspaper, Il Secolo. For about twenty years Pella was not even a comune, merged with San Maurizio d'Opaglio and Pogno.
